Greg Homann is the Artistic Director of the iconic Market Theatre Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa.He has been a leading figure in the South African theatrical landscape for well over a decade.

His influential work as a director, dramaturg, and playwright includes award-winning and imaginative theatre across a wide range of forms. Amongst his more than 30 professional directing credits are 15 world premieres – 10 of them being new South African plays. His playful and cheeky takes on world-classics are also a key feature of his portfolio.

His theatre productions have enjoyed both box-office and critical success at almost every major theatre in South Africa, including The Market Theatre, The Fugard Theatre, Artscape, The Durban Playhouse, The Theatre on the Square and The South African State Theatre. His work has been a staple at the Hilton Arts Festival and the National Arts Festival. The productions he has directed and/or written have been nominated for over forty awards, winning multiple Naledi Theatre Awards including Best New South African Play and two for Best Cutting-Edge Production.

In 2014 he was the recipient of South Africa’s highest accolade for theatre, the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award. He has served in leadership roles in The Wits School of Arts and at AFDA Johannesburg as the Head of School of Live Performance. He has been a valued member of the Artistic Committee of the National Arts Festival and was Resident Dramaturg at The South African State Theatre.

As a distinguished academic on post-Apartheid theatre, he has edited a collection of contemporary South African plays and co-edited two internationally published books on contemporary South African drama, theatre, and performance. He has designed and taught directing, playwriting and acting courses, and has lectured broadly on topics that include post-colonialism, theatre history, and identity studies.

Over the years he has mentored many theatre-makers, directors, and emerging writers in South Africa and the UK, and has a respected track record of working alongside established local and international playwrights in the development of their plays. He has served as dramaturg on Syracuse Stage’s 2021 production of Athol Fugard’s ‘MASTER HAROLD’…AND THE BOYS and with San Jose Stage on L. Peter Callender’s STRANGE COURTESIES, and, more recently, in Kosovo as dramaturg on Jeton Neziraj’s UNDER THE SHADE OF A TREE I SAT AND WEPT.

Greg’s work in the UK includes post-graduate supervision at Central School of Speech and Drama and lecturing theatre-making at Warwick University, along with directing HUMANS AT WORK, WHEN SWALLOWS CRY, VERSTÄNDNIS [UNDERSTANDING] and creating IN OUR SKIN under commission as Associate Artist at the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) which drew on verbatim interviews to depict the lives of gay men living in Birmingham and Johannesburg.
