ABOUT US

The John Kani Performing Arts Academy (JKA) is a non-profit organisation founded by South African theatre icon, Dr. John Kani. Born out of a legacy of truth-telling, excellence and creative activism, the Academy exists to refine and elevate the standards of professional performance in South Africa.

JKA is a place for  creative artists interested in up-skilling in their chosen career. It is an advanced training institution designed specifically for experienced creative artists who are ready to push their craft further. Every course, masterclass and workshop is curated to strengthen technique, deepen creative thinking and prepare artists for high-impact work on the national and global stages.

Our approach is practical, rigorous and industry-aligned. We believe in performance as a powerful tool for truth, healing, transformation – and legacy-building. That belief is embedded into everything we do.

We partner with seasoned facilitators, respected institutions and cultural leaders to ensure our training is relevant, world-class and deeply rooted in the South African story.

OUR MISSION

To advance the craft and professionalism of South Africa’s  artists in the creative arts through focused, high-level training.

OUR VISION

A transformed arts industry where excellence is not accidental, but intentional – where South African talent is empowered, equipped and globally respected.

OUR CORE VALUES

  • Excellence: We hold a high standard in every aspect of what we deliver.
  • Integrity: We honour truth, discipline and the depth of artistic responsibility.
  • Legacy: We train artists to create work that endures.
  •

This is more than just an academy.

It is a declaration: that South African performance is worthy, powerful and here to stay.
